A Quick Q&A with Stephanie Anspach
Stephanie Anspach’s work is grounded in reality. Her designs elevate staple everyday garment just enough to make them feel special again, in particular her multi demential knitwear. Her sartorial slant is slight androgynous, but no less alluring and there is a sensibility about her collections. She is designing for world where jeans and sweatshirts are de rigueur but there is still a desire to attain elegance, albeit one that is natural and comfortable. Basically Anspach, who is Belgian, is capturing in her clothing the effortless nonchalance that the world think French women pull off better than anyone else. Maybe she is their hidden secret to modern chic style.
Q: How did you first get interested in fashion?
A: Designing my own clothes line is a childhood dream… When I was little, I used to make clothes for my dolls with my grandmother.
Q: What made you finally decide to launch out your own and create your own line?
A: I held on to my dream, and when I was around 21, I decided to start making it real. I’m quite the lone wolf and starting this adventure alone wasn’t a problem for me, although now, I wouldn’t be against finding a more ” business” partner.
Q: Who inspires you?
A: The women who inspire me are the women of my life: my grandmother, my mother, my friends… and Jane Birkin, for her elegant nonchalance.
Q: Who living or dead would you love to be able to have dinner with?
A: Serge Gainsbourg.
Q: What is your favorite trip?
A: I would love to go to Japan. Discovering that culture must be so inspiring for knowledge as much as on the creative level. Minimalism and refinement : everything I love.
Q: When are you happiest?
A: When I am with the people I love.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing?
A: Developing my brand outside of Belgium.
Q: What is your secret talent ?
A: I don’t think I have a secret talent… what I do best is sweaters.
