Deborah Reyner Sebag: Quick Q&A

Jessica Michault,

It’s almost as if French women are born with good taste. Like sophistication is hardwired into their DNA and chicness flows through their veins. A perfect example of this fashion truism is Deborah Reyner Sebag. She is a respected fashion editor, with over 10 years of experience, who has worked at such prestigious publications as Vogue US, Elle France and L’Officiel. But it’s with her website The Daily Deb (and Instagram feed the bares the same name) that Deborah has really been able to showcase her editorial skills.

Broken into seven categories: Daily Look, Daily Backstage, Daily Love, Daily News, Daily Mood, Daily Guest and Daily Shop – The Daily Deb website is a smorgasbord of beautiful images that are an ode to modern elegance and the “je ne sais quoi” that is the “French Touch”.  For Deborah, the whole site has a fundamental focus on helping readers understand the latest fashion trends and incorporate them into looks that are both modern and evergreen, often using herself as the example of how best to execute a sartorial idea.

Here Deborah opens up about her style creds, her dream dinner guest and mulling over the idea of getting re-married in the age of social media.

How did you first get interested in fashion?
Since I was little girl, because my parents used to work in fashion. My father has his own knit brand and my mother had a huge wholesale store, so it’s part of me.

What made you finally decide to launch out on your own and start your site?
Actually I have been fashion editor for 12 years now and I realized 3 years ago a lack of french fashion influencers with a real fashion knowledge. That was the thing which made me decide to launch The Daily Deb with a “how to wear it” DNA, in order to share with my community my fashion tips and the behind the scene of my job.

What was your big break?
My big break was actually the end of my collaboration with french ELLE after 7 years working as a fashion editor there. It was also the beginning of my website. I enjoyed this period, to be able to really concentrate on my personal projects  while continuing to stay active in fashion as a freelance stylist for brands. Even if that period was stressful and in the beginning I felt a bit “lost”, leaving Elle made it possible to bring  The Daily Deb to life, so of course today I don’t regret it.

Who inspires you?
The street, old movie and icons, I like to find inspiration in vintage pieces and of course, my Mom and Grandmother, Mamie Marie (future Instagram star).

Who, living or dead, would you love to be able to have dinner with?
Leandra Medine for her fashion approach and her sense of humour. Or Isabel Marant, what she has done is such a wonderful example of a French success story. I  would love to have her precious advice.

What is your favorite trip?
I love to spend weekends in the south of France, it is easy to go to and very “dépaysant”.

When are you happiest?
When I am with my kids.

What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing?
To be the next Chiara and become re-married to have the same wedding as her, for free!

What is your secret talent?
Maybe my ability to spend nights working from 12 to 4am when everybody is asleep (husband, kids and the street).

What is your motto or the best piece of advice you ever got?
Never give up, accept critics and use it to progress!

What emoji do you use the most?
The ❤️, to thank all the love I receive on my Instagram comments.

What is the latest Instagram feed you decided to follow?
Camilla Deterre for her atttiude and the freshness of her Instagram.
